Gable Road Rehabilitation

Description

The Gable Roads are a critical asset to Brisbane Airport’s Airside Operations. They provide observational access for Airside Operations Officers (AOO’s) in undertaking wildlife management activities around the runway. The Gable Road on runway 01R/19L is in varying condition with areas that are;

  • Unsealed and presenting a Foreign Object Debris (FOD) risk when traversing onto the active aircraft pavements.

  • Deteriorated and requiring rehabilitation works.

  • Poor drainage with localised low points which causes ponding and flooding that impedes access and the AOO duties during and following rainfall.

Role

Dykman Consulting is responsible for the full depth pavement and ground rehabilitation design including subgrade replacement and compaction, or alternative pavement design, over the identified new pavement areas. Design of improved stormwater resilience including regrading of the pavement surface profile and flank areas to improve stormwater run off within the project areas.

The aim of the project is to improve access, safety and active management practices for Airside Operation Officers which will directly improve aviation safety by reducing risk of bird strikes on Runway 01R/19L. Additionally it will reduce ongoing maintenance costs of the existing Gable Road sections into the future and will reduce FOD risks associated with vehicles driving on unsealed sections of the gable road, then entering taxiways the system

Challenges & Achievements

  • Achieves the engineering, operational and maintenance objectives for which it is intended.

  • Reduces the capital cost of the construction works.

  • Minimises the impact on the surrounding environment.
